When One Door Closes

About This Piece:

“When One Door Closes” was the last piece I wrote before graduating high school. The title is, of course, inspired by the phrase, “when one door closes, another door opens.” The piece expresses the sadness of a door closing (having to move on from someone or something). It also expresses the excitement and hope for what lies behind the newly opened door (what the future holds). I thought this would be a fitting piece to represent my emotions as I went through my last few weeks of high school, while also looking forward to the opportunities I would have in college. "When One Door Closes" was premiered by Dr. Mario Pelusi (conductor), Dr. David Gresham (clarinet), Dr. Cora Swenson Lee, and Dr. John Orfe (piano) on March 12, 2023 in the Bertha Frank Performing Arts Center at the annual Morton High School Composers' Guild "In Their Own Write" concert. The piece won an award at this concert for "best of show."
